Imagine Cup 2011 – Story of Team Gatotkaca from Indonesia

Do you know 35% major cause of early death for baby are caused by inadequate care of children and women, inadequate diets, over consumption of unhealthy foods? Four students from Institut Teknologi Telkom, Indonesia realized this problem and want to put a stop on this problem by using “childhood” application. They are Team Gatotkaca from Indonesia. The team is consist of Dody Qori Utama, Arganka Yahya, Kania Audrint, and Anggunmeka Luhur Prasasti. With the help from Dr.Tauhid Nur Azhar, health practitioner and doctor who later on voluntarily dedicate himself as the team mentor for this project, they have successfully enter the worldwide final of Imagine Cup.

Check out their project at Imagine Cup People Choice’s Award and support them if you like their project by casting your vote on them. They will heading to New York City represent Indonesia in Imagine Cup 2011 Worldwide Final in Software Design category  this coming 8th – 13th of July 2011. They will be competing with teams around the world. I’m lucky enough to get contact with them and learn about their story as one of the Microsoft Student Partner (MSP) Social Media Team.

Q: Tell us about your project?

The “childhood” is a project which is built to educate mothers about healthy eating habits for children and recognize child development milestone through their own smart phone.  It allows mother to be more aware about their children health and increase parent involvement which is crucial to proper child growth. “childhood” is also connected with doctors who can suggest a proper action if the system detects unusual development from child growth.

The design and development of “childhood” stemmed from the fact that many parents struggle with a lack of information about healthy eating habits and the importance of breast-feeding. According to World Health Organization, 35% major cause of early death for baby are caused by inadequate care of children and women, inadequate diets ,over consumption of unhealthy foods.

Through posyandu*, government actually has already set seminar and training for educating mothers to strengthen knowledge on importance of childcare. However, the quantity and quality of such activities highly depend on each posyandus , that some posyandus, actively hold such program for mothers in the neighborhood, while some others are less active or even dormant. With social and economic activities nowadays, mothers tend to skip posyandu’s program. Still these mothers actually need comprehensive guidance for nurturing their children.

Therefore this “childhood” project aims at delivering a comprehensive guidance for recognizing baby development milestones, measuring child growth, and detecting whether there is unusual children development .This system is also capable of analyzing food composition that agrees with healthy eating habits for children. In terms of worldwide deployment, it is highly feasible because WHO has released standardized criteria for measuring child growth for every country.

All children have every right to be raised in a caring family and to have access to quality health care, good nutrition, education, play and protection from harm, abuse and discrimination. It is basically the very right to grow up in an environment in which children are enabled to reach their full potential in life. It is the duty of parents, other caregivers and family members, communities, civil society and governments to ensure that these rights are respected, protected and fulfilled.

*posyandu: the smallest informal health unit in every sub-district dealing with mothers and children health

Q: Why did you create this project? What inspired you to create this project?

We create this project due to the fact that our young generation is our future. We are so worry about what happened to our young generation right now and the factor endangering their life that is malnutrition. What inspired us to build this project is the story of Thomas Alva Edison’s  mother  who nurtured, encouraged and fed her child as best as she could so that Edison can be one of the greatest  inventor in his century. We believed that if all mothers in the world know how to nurture their children the way Nancy Elliot Edison did to his son,we are going to have  wonderful and bright young generation in the future. That’s why we want to equip mothers with the very best tool to nurture their children and  decrease the risk of malnutrition happened to their own children.

Imagine Cup 2011 – Story of Team MACARA from Indonesia

What do you think algae can do? Algae to others might just some green organism but four students from Team MACARA designed EDCOS project to use algae to solve our world toughest problem. The team is consist of Ednaz Hermawan, Alfan Presekal, Reza Bhaskoro Wibowo and Aditya Rinus Pratama Putra. They are all from University of Indonesia. Together with the help from their mentors Catur Apriono, Agus Kurniawan and Dianursanti, they have successfully enter the worldwide final of Imagine Cup.

Check out their project at Imagine Cup People Choice’s Award and support them if you like their project by casting your vote on them. They will heading to New York City represent Indonesia in Imagine Cup 2011 Worldwide Final in Embedded Development category  this coming 8th – 13th of July 2011. They will be competing with teams around the world. I’m lucky enough to get contact with them and learn about their story as one of the Microsoft Student Partner (MSP) Social Media Team.

Q: Tell us about your project?

EDCOS (Environment Digitally Controlled System) is a project that we offer as a solution to the problem of global warming, hunger, and renewable energy. We try to design an instrument (fotoreactor), with manufacturing control systems to increase the amount of biomass that can be produced. We hope to implement control systems in algae fotoreactor. This system will control the variables algal growth, such as  temperature and concentration of CO2 absorption. Thus we expect this fotoreactor will be able to enlarge the production of microalgae biomass. More microalgae biomass produced more CO2 that can be absorbed.  Besides  the more biomass that can be used as new food ingredients and sources of glucose to bioenergy manufacture.

Q: Why did you create this project? What inspired you to create this project?

Algae are living creatures that get its energy from photosynthesis using CO2 from air as a carbon source for glucose production. The cultivation of algae will be very supportive of CO2 reductions in the air. The problem in the production of algae is the amount of biomass produced is very small. In 13 Liter medium algae growth, biomass obtained only about 10 grams of biomass. Therefore we try to design an instrument (fotoreactor), with manufacturing control systems to increase the amount of biomass that can be produced. Proliferation of algae can use an embedded system, in which algae is cultivated using a special tool. The surplus compared to the conventional way that is, we can control algae growth optimally.

Q: Is this your first time joining Imagine Cup? How does it feel like?

Yes, this is the first time we join Imagine Cup. It feels so great, we can know about innovative solutions around the world. Also we can know about the world problems and let us invent some ideas to solve them.

Q: How has your participation in the Imagine Cup impacted your life?

It feels great. Before we join Imagine Cup we didn’t know well about some people on our faculty that have so many potentials about creating ideas to solve the problem of the world. After we join Imagine Cup, we finally know those people and we can share our experiences and ideas to each other.

Q: What is your plan on your project after Imagine Cup 2011?

The first our plan after Imagine Cup 2011 are to implement our project at Laboratory as tools for students for doing some experiments with they study. This is one of our commitment to Mrs. Dianursanti that if our project has completely finish, she wants this tools can be implement at hes laboratory, so can useful for other students.

The next plan is develop this project . we want we can control overall system from algae until be resource of biofuel , bioetanol , and food supplement.  So this tools can produce something more than more biomass. We hope we can do that thing, cause our dream are make something that can be useful to make better life for everyone.

“Imagine Cup is a place where you can explore your ideas and creativity through technology to solve the world’s toughest problems. What are you waiting for? Join Imagine Cup immediately and make your friends, family, and your country proud of you”

Imagine Cup 2011 – Story of Team NewKrean from Thailand

Natural disasters always strike us hard no matter how hard we came prepared. Lack of information often cause some place got left behind after the disasters. 4 students from Chulalongkorn University aim to solve this problem by connecting volunteers and victims together to build a strong community with their solution call Terra Project. The team is consist of Kriangkrai Pipatvilaikul, Wannapon Suraworachet, Tanon Sirawan and Jirapat Yaovatsakul. No one shall get left behind anymore with Terra Project.

They will be represent Thailand in Imagine Cup 2011 Worldwide Final in Software Design category at New York City this coming 8th – 13th of July 2011 together with their team mentor Dr. Krung Sinapiromsaran. They will be competing with teams around the world. I’m lucky enough to get contact with them and learn about their story as one of the Microsoft Student Partner (MSP) Social Media Team.

Q: Tell us about your project?

Imagine the world where people are helping others. As the large scale of natural disasters are suddenly happened everyday, people should beware of themselves and beloved ones. Terra Project is the project developed for connecting volunteers and victims together to build a strong community. We have seen how when a large scale natural disaster comes, there would always be lack in number of officials [firemen, rescue team, civil workers] to help all the victims in crisis. Every person with the will to help should be notified where their help is needed. Terra Project is created for connecting individual victims to potential volunteers around them. You can tell people across various your social network sites about what is going on with you and where you are, with just simply One Click! With our various functionalities and tools, we ensure that the world where people are helping each other is no longer an imagination.

Q: Why did you create this project? What inspired you to create this project?

Not long before Imagine Cup 2011 started, Thailand was crushed with the greatest rain flood in its history. Over million households were damaged. However, only those villages that made it to the Television news were acknowledged and received huge showers of aids, while the others were completely ignored.

Our team had a chance to visit one of the ‘less acknowledged’ village on the university trip. Help did not come to this village, even as there are over millions of volunteers willing to help, because they don’t know any information, and it took experimental courage for our tour guide to lead us here. From this trip, we wish to create an application that will be the center for each volunteer and each victim to communicate in times of natural disasters, so that no one shall be unacknowledged anymore.

Q: Is this your first time joining Imagine Cup? How does it feel like?

Two of us joined Imagine Cup before this while other two are newly to this competition. The first participation was ended up because previous team did not have a good enough plan. We could not develop software on time. Thus, we try to learn from past that we will never give up again. This time we got an opportunity by being selected as a winner team from Thailand. We have never ever imagined that we could reach this point before! It is really unbelievable! Thus, we will do our best to achieve this competition. 🙂

Q: How has your participation in the Imagine Cup impacted your life?

Life with Imagine Cup is so exciting! Once we are the winner of Thailand, crowds are staring at us. Although we have to work hard on our project, all supports and opportunities come out every way! We gain lots of experience that will be the most precious moment of our lives!

Q: What is your plan on your project after Imagine Cup 2011?

We believe that everyone can be a part of the better world only if we work together to achieve it! Therefore, we will make Terra Project the central ground that ultimately integrate and unite all people and social networks together into the world largest community of volunteers. We have seen how mankind has overcome disasters when we work together, and from now on, we will make it much easier to unite and collaborate people together in face of natural disasters, with just one click.

“Imagine the better world, Imagine a better life, Imagine every possibility, join Imagine Cup!”

Why Orchard CMS is Not Good for Blogging

Previously, I had been busy exploring Orchard CMS verion 1.1 that I had just installed. Orchard CMS is a free, open source, community-focused content management system aimed at delivering applications and reusable components on the ASP.NET platform. Microsoft Malaysia is running a series of competition for Orchard CMS.

Since Orchard came with a Blog receipt, so I decided to build my Ooiks Blog using Orchard as the exercise. Although I’m perfectly understand that Orchard is still new and a CMS does not mean a good tool for building blog website compare with other available tool like WordPress which was customized specially for blogging, but Orchard just did not pass my minimum requirement for a tool to build blog website.

Reason #1 – No Back Post

Orchard allow user to publish the post immediately or later by specified date, but user can’t back post on the date in the past. That mean I can’t manually import my blog post from other blog like WordPress to Orchard because the date will change to today’s date. This is not annoying enough, every time I update a post that I found a minor error there, it force me to publish again on today’s date. If I correct a post in last week, it will become the post I post today and go all the way up to the first post.

Reason #2 – No category

I like to group my blog posts into multiple categories because I used to blog more than one topic on my blog for example Imagine Cup and AutoBot. This enable my readers to browse to specified category they want. Although Orchard’s build-in blog provide tag feature, but it missing category feature which I want the most.

Reason #3 – Limited Modules and Themes

I know Orchard is new that is the reason why it have so few Modules and Themes available to download, but there are just too few of them to select, not to include those useless module and theme. Orchard need more modules and themes to attract more user to use it.

Hope next version of Orchard will solve those problems and provide more feature for blogging.

Setup Microsoft Outlook 2010 for USM Student Mail

This no longer work after USM move the server to Microsoft Exchange server. Check my latest post instead https://ooiks.com/blog/how-to-2/how-to-configure-outlook-2010-for-usm-student-mail-updated

If you are a Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) students and you have Microsoft Outlook 2010 installed on your PC. You might have the trouble connecting your Microsoft Outlook 2010 with your student mail. Although USM student mail can be access through http://mail.live.com just like other hotmail or live mail, but direct enter your e-mail address on outlook like hotmail or live mail will not work in Microsoft Outlook 2010.

Your probably had search through http://student.usm.my/ for an answer for this problem but end out with no solution other than just using POP3. I personally dislike POP3 as it download the all mails from your inbox and it will not sync with your mail box online after that. I prefer IMAP which allow my outlook to sync with my mail online so that I can continue my work on e-mail through web browser on other PC without worry that what I see is different on my outlook.

So how we do the trick using IMAP on Microsoft Outlook 2010? It is very simple.

Step 1: Go to File on top of your menu and click on Add Account.

Step 2: Select Manually configure server settings or additional server types instead of E-mail Account. Then click Next.

Step 3: Select Other and choose Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector. If your Outlook does not have Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector, just do a simple search on Bing, you should get the installer very easy. Then click Next.

Step 4: Enter your name, your student e-mail address and password. Then click OK.

Step 5: Done, we had finish setting up the account. Just click Finish and start access your student mail through Microsoft Outlook 2010.

Aren’t it is simple? Just wondering why Microsoft Outlook 2010 cannot automatically do the trick instead.
